“I went sky divin’,
I went rocky mountain climbin’,
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Fumanchu.
And I loved deeper,
And I spoke sweeter,
And I gave forgiveness I’ve been denying,
And he said someday I hope you get the chance,
To live like you were dyin’.”
Tim McGraw, “Live like you were dying”
“The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and in a thousand things well.” Horace Walpole
Think Box- A Person of “One Thing”
PALANCE: “Yeah. You all come out here about the same age. Same problems. Spend fifty weeks a year getting knots in your rope then- then you think two weeks up here will untie them for you. None of you get it. (Long Pause) Do you know what the secret of life is?”
CRYSTAL: “No, what?”
PALANCE: “This.” (Holds up his index finger)
CRYSTAL: “Your finger?”
PALANCE: “One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean s-.”
CRYSTAL: “That’s great, but what’s the one thing?”
PALANCE: “That’s what you’ve got to figure out.”
From the movie- “City Slickers” starring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance
“One Thing” Defined-
Living life as an integrated and balanced whole; founded, focused and driven by your clearly defined beliefs, values and vision that flow from the “One Thing” that is your ultimate thing.
We can only discover what our “One Thing” is when we take time to think about, challenge and then determine what’s the “One Thing” that I am going to live for and that I am ultimately willing to die for.
What is the “One Thing” that I am willing to surrender my life to and serve in order to live life to the fullest while making a meaningful and lasting contribution.
How we will know when we are living for “One Thing.”
“One Thing” Applied-
“One Thing” is Not…slavery, it IS…freedom
“One Thing” is Not…segregated, it IS…integrated
“One Thing” is Not…out-of-balance, it IS… balanced
“One Thing” is Not…getting, it IS…giving
“One Thing” is Not…unfocused, it IS…focused
“One Thing” is Not…reactive, it IS…pro-active
“One Thing” is Not…brokenness, it IS…wholeness
“One Thing” is Not…confusion, it IS…clarity
86. Begin to think about what your “One Thing” is. What is the “One Thing” you are willing to give your life to?
(NOTE: We will dig into this further in a later post, but begin to think about and challenge the possibilities.)
“the feeling of being hurried is not usually the result of living a full life and having no time. It is, on the contrary, born of a vague fear that we are wasting our life. When we do not do the one thing we ought to do, we have no time for anything else- we are the busiest people in the world.” Eric Hoffer, American Social Writer and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill
